Accounting success adds up for NMIT learners
Three NMIT accounting students have been recognised at this year's Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) regional awards event.
Learning to think differently
NMIT’s Master of Applied Management helped graduate Sumitha Raju strengthen the leadership and critical thinking skills needed to advance her career.
Sumitha now works as a Nurse Liaison with Older Persons Mental Health (OPMH), supporting older adults experiencing mental health and cognitive challenges. She works closely with aged residential care facilities, residents, families and healthcare teams to help ensure people receive the right support at the right time.
A broader approach to challenges
While her nursing background had given her strong clinical knowledge, Sumitha says the Master of Applied Management (MAM) programme at NMIT changed the way she approached problems and challenges.

Building confidence through research
One of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of her study was the research component. Completing her thesis, collecting and analysing data and meeting deadlines required commitment and perseverance. Regular guidance and feedback from her supervisors helped Sumitha navigate the process and successfully complete her research.
The experience has given her research skills that she continues to draw on in her professional work.
Learning from different perspectives
Among her favourite memories of studying at NMIT were the classroom discussions and group activities. With classmates from a range of professional backgrounds and industries, Sumitha valued the opportunity to share experiences and learn from different perspectives.
“Hearing real-life examples and connecting them to the course topics broadened my understanding and challenged me to think in new ways.”
For Sumitha, this diversity was an important part of what made the MAM experience so valuable. It created opportunities to look beyond her own professional experience and consider different approaches to management, leadership and problem-solving.
Looking back, Sumitha is proud of how the programme has shaped her approach and opened new opportunities.
“I am proud of what I achieved through the MAM programme. It gave me more than a qualification; it helped me develop personally and professionally.”
