My semester abroad in Nelson was unforgettable. Locals were incredibly warm and made me feel at home from day one. The natural beauty was even more memorable - from hiking in Abel Tasman and exploring the Nelson Lakes to spotting dolphins and penguins in the wild. Nelson’s landscapes and people made the whole experience truly special.
Magdalena Rodriguez, USA
Third-year Bachelor of Science student Magdalena from the University of New Mexico shares in her own words how stepping beyond the familiar surroundings of her life in Albuquerque, USA, and choosing to spend a semester abroad at NMIT helped her grow as an individual.
Stuart Whitmer, USA
Studying sport science at NMIT was unforgettable. The tutors have real industry experience and create a hands-on, supportive learning environment. I loved applying new skills each week while teaching at a local college. Nelson itself is stunning, boasting beaches, trails, and friendly locals. It’s the perfect place to study, train, and explore Aotearoa.
Laura & Daniela, Germany
We studied Industrial Engineering with a focus on Mechanical Engineering back home in Germany and then took Business courses at NMIT. Nelson is truly the sunniest place in New Zealand, with fantastic scenery and hiking - we even discovered penguins in Oamaru!
Josef Burkan, Norway
NMIT was much smaller than my university in Norway, which made it easier to meet people - locals and internationals alike. Nelson was super social thanks to SANITI and plenty of community groups, and the vibe was always positive. The nature was unbelievable and unlike anything I’ve seen. Honestly, that alone makes me want to return.
Kaija Dybdahl, USA
Leaving snowy Montana, Kaija followed her passion for exercise science to NMIT through ISEP. An injury sparked her interest in rehab, and NMIT’s supportive tutors helped her grow even further. “They really know their stuff and genuinely care,” she says. Now she’s heading home energised to start her career or continue into athletic training - with new confidence and clarity.
Markus Ottersbach, Germany

Jørgen Sovre, Jørgen Toftner and Jørgen Mosvold Salvesen, Norway
Three Jørgens from Norway spent a semester studying IT at NMIT — and loved it. Passionate tutors, small classes, and standout courses, such as Cloud Services and Computer Systems Architecture, helped them learn faster and push harder. Outside class, Nelson’s outdoors stole the show. “You can walk from town into the woods in minutes.” NMIT got a definite thumbs-up.
Timo Oerlemans, Netherlands
Studying abroad in Aotearoa was life-changing. The landscapes were unforgettable, but immersing myself in new cultures had the biggest impact. I learned more about my own adaptability and curiosity, and the teaching style expanded my perspective on the world. If you’re considering it, go - New Zealand offers beauty, diversity, and a chance to grow in ways you don’t expect.

An Unforgettable Journey: My Experience at NMIT's Sport Science Program in Nelson The Sport Science course at NMIT in Nelson, New Zealand was a wonderful experience. Dedicated professors (tutors) who have lived in the industry provide an excellent, practical, and engaging learning environment alongside about 10 other Kiwi students. I enjoyed the practical experience I received at NMIT. I had an excellent teaching experience at a local high school (college) each week. Getting to use the skills learned in the lecture earlier in the week. The tutors are more than willing to help with finding, programming, and executing weekly personal training for clients. Living in Nelson is beautiful. One of the many panoramic views is from the center of New Zealand Monument, which is just a 20-minute walk from campus and shows New Zealand's epic landscape. A 20-minute bike ride around the bay will land you at the great Tahunanui beach. From there you can see across Tasman Bay and behold the beautiful mountains of the Abel Tasman. There are many shops, pubs, and places to eat in the city center, and lots of events are taking place. Getting involved in the community is very easy. Kiwis are very welcoming people and will give you lots of tips and tricks for exploring the great land of Whakatu (Nelson) and the rest of Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Our Study Abroad Experience at NMIT We’re studying Industrial Engineering with a focus on Mechanical Engineering back home in Germany and are currently taking Business courses at NMIT. Nelson really is the sunniest place in New Zealand, and while it’s cold back home, we’re enjoying warm summer days here. The scenery is amazing — one of our best memories is hiking at Mount Sunday and watching the penguins in Oamaru. The study system here is quite different too — in Germany, we usually have all exams in one week at the end of the semester, but here there’s something to hand in almost every week. If you’re planning to come here, get a car — it makes exploring all the beautiful places so much easier! —Laura & Daniela, Germany |

Swapping snow skis for sunshine Leaving behind the snowy peaks of Montana wasn’t just about escaping the cold; for Kaija, it was about chasing her passion. Ski racing, exercise, and the outdoors led her to study exercise science, and that same passion brought her to NMIT through the ISEP Study Abroad programme. Kaija began her studies in the US as a pre-law student, but soon realised her passion was in the fitness industry. “Throughout my time in ski racing, I spent a lot of time in the gym and had a lot of personal trainers. I learned to love the gym, lifting, and coaching.” During Kaija’s third year of her exercise science degree in Montana, Kaija unfortunately suffered from an injury to her knee, which shifted her focus. “Since the injury, I’ve become really interested in the rehabbing side of things and really love to watch people improve.” Kaija explained that what stood out most at NMIT was the supportive academics “I’m not used to having a personal relationship with any of my professors. It’s been wonderful to build those relationships with each tutor individually. They’re always so willing to help and give you their time. I’ve really loved all my tutors here; they all have such good invaluable insights and are super free with their vast knowledge. I’ve learnt to focus on the big ideas and the things that are important.” Armed with the insight of the NMIT tutors, Kaija is energised to take her knowledge back home to the United States and either begin her career or move on to further study in Athletic Training. — Kaija Dybdahl, USA |

My unforgettable study abroad experience in New Zealand Studying abroad in New Zealand was truly a life-changing experience. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the breathtaking beauty of the country, from its green hills to its crystal-clear lakes and majestic mountains. Exploring iconic locations, including some famous for being filming sites, added an extra touch to the journey. These natural wonders alone were enough to make the experience unforgettable, but my time there went far beyond sightseeing. One of the most valuable aspects of this experience was the opportunity to immerse myself in different cultures. I also learned a lot about myself, gaining a deeper understanding of my interest, adaptability, and curiosity. The academic environment was equally transformative. The teaching methods and perspectives at my host school broadened my vision, challenging me to think beyond the frameworks I had been accustomed to back home. I wholeheartedly recommend studying abroad in New Zealand to anyone considering it. It’s a chance to discover a stunningly beautiful country, embrace cultural diversity, and develop yourself. My time there has left an indelible mark on me, and I will always look back on it with immense gratitude and joy. — Timo Oerlemans, Netherlands |

Making lifelong memories abroad My semester abroad in Nelson, New Zealand, was an unforgettable experience. The people here are incredibly warm and welcoming. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with kindness, and the openness of the locals made me feel at home right away. The natural beauty of New Zealand, however, left the deepest impression on me. Nelson, surrounded by breathtaking national parks, offered endless opportunities for exploration. Highlights included hiking in Abel Tasman National Park and visiting the Nelson Lakes, where I was struck by the serene landscapes. I was also lucky enough to see dolphins and penguins in the wild. — Maurice Braun, Germany |

Reflecting on my exchange experience NMIT was much smaller than my university in Norway. However, it made it a lot easier to connect with people; that goes for both domestic and international students. I also found it very easy to be social in Nelson thanks to SANITI and external organizations which there were a lot of. Finally, I will say that I think Nelson is a great environment to be in as an exchange student. It has a lot of people but it is not overwhelmingly big, and everyone there seems unusually positive. The New Zealand nature was extremely beautiful and unlike anything I have ever seen. Just that alone is enough to make me want to go back. — Josef Burkan, Norway |

Meet the Jørgens Jørgen Sovre, Jørgen Toftner, and Jørgen Mosvold Salvesen came from Norway’s University of Agder to spend a semester at NMIT. They all studied IT and shared the same first name. Their studies included courses in Cloud Services and Computer Systems Architecture. “The tutors are so passionate about the courses,” says Toftner. “I think I learned more on that course than anything else in my whole Bachelor!” adds Sovre. “Computer System Architecture was a great course everyone should have as a base to any bachelor’s degree in computers.” The smaller classes were a refreshing change from home. “It allowed us to learn faster, have more discussion, and it motivated us to work harder,” says Mosvold Salvesen. Sovre agrees: “We had great teachers at NMIT. They were friends as well as teachers which inspired us to work hard.” Exploring Nelson’s outdoors was another highlight. “I like how in Nelson you can go from town straight into the woods in five minutes’ walk,” says Toftner. With its teaching, lifestyle, and setting, NMIT earned their full approval. — Jørgen Sovre, Jørgen Toftner and Jørgen Mosvold Salvesen, Norway |
