Hayley Keown - Nursing | Tutor

Originally from Marlborough, Hayley studied nursing at NMIT, commuting daily from Blenheim to Nelson alongside a group of fellow students.

That experience has come full circle, as she now teaches on the Nursing programme, and is especially proud that it is available at the Marlborough Campus.

“It is a wonderful thing that NMIT now has the Nursing course running from the Marlborough Campus. This has opened the door for a lot of students.”

Professionally, Hayley has spent five years working as a hospice nurse in both inpatient and community settings. She values the connection that comes with caring for people in their homes, as well as the clinical challenges of acute care.

Her experience also includes working in urgent care, where she completed the CENNZ triage course, further strengthening her assessment and decision-making skills. During this time, she undertook preceptor papers and discovered how much she enjoyed supporting students and new nurses to build confidence and capability.

In the classroom, Hayley fosters an inclusive and interactive learning environment. She draws on the diverse life experiences of her students to enrich discussion and deepen understanding, creating a space where everyone feels valued and engaged.

“Teaching is very rewarding - working alongside the students to reach their goal is a real privilege.”

Hayley is passionate about the breadth of opportunity within nursing. From community care to acute settings and advanced pathways, she believes it’s an exciting time to enter the profession.

“The wide range of fields that a Registered Nurse can go into is truly amazing. There are so many opportunities to continue growing and studying.”
