Funding

The New Zealand government subsidises programme and course costs for New Zealand citizens and residents.

This subsidy also applies to Australian students because of agreements between the New Zealand and Australian governments.

Students from other countries who choose to study in New Zealand are charged the full fee.

When do I pay my fees?

Full-time programmes

You must pay your fees in full before the programme or course starts, or by any earlier date as specified for a particular programme.

Part-time study, micro-credentials, or short courses

For short courses, or if you are studying on a programme, you must pay your fees in full at the time of enrolment.

RAC application fees

Your Recognition of Academic Credit (RAC) assessment fee must be paid at the same time as submitting your RAC application form. See more information here.(external link)

FAQ

Additional costs

Some programmes require assessments, examinations, or subject entry fees paid to external bodies such as NZQA or the Nursing Council. These fees may be included in your total payment.

Additional costs may also apply to your programme, such as a chef's kit or required gear for the practical aspects of your study.

These should be communicated during your application process, or if you are not sure, check with your programme area.

Your responsibility towards fees and costs

It is important to remember that you are liable for all fees and charges on the date you enrol. Even if you do not start the programme or attend all of the sessions, you are still liable for all fees unless you have officially withdrawn within the refund period.

If you do not enrol but attend classes at NMIT, you will be liable for all fees associated with the programme and will receive an invoice.

Fees not paid by the due date may attract a late payment penalty.

You may not be permitted to attend class if you still owe NMIT money from a previous programme.

Student debt

You must settle all amounts owed to NMIT for example, programme fees, accommodation, overdue library books or activity charges. Until your balance is cleared:

Your results may be withheld
You may not be able to graduate

If you're experiencing financial difficulties, it's best to talk to student support early so we can help; don't wait until graduation.

NMIT reserves the right to supply personal information about your debt to a debt collection agency or any other person as necessary.

Financial assistance

If you're struggling to pay, reach out early to the Learner Support team. They are here to help you find a solution. You can receive some financial support for your fees in various ways. There are grants, scholarships, student loans, and student allowances. It is worth investigating what you are entitled to or can apply for to make your life as a student financially less stressful.
