The scholarships total $20,000 for Māori learners studying in 2026.
The NBPH Miraka Norgate QSM Scholarship and the NBPH Archdeacon Emeritus Harvey Ruru QSM Scholarship each offer two learners up to $5,000 toward course fees, helping remove financial barriers and open doors for rangatahi under 25.
The scholarships are named in honour of Miraka Norgate QSM and Archdeacon Emeritus Harvey Ruru QSM, valued kaumatua and members of NBPH’s Māori advisory board, Te Tumu Whakaora. Both Miraka and Harvey are deeply committed to supporting rangatahi to thrive.
“These scholarships are about more than funding,” says Kate Neame, NMIT’s Director Demand Management. “They’re an opportunity for young people to receive guidance, mentorship, and encouragement as they pursue their studies and build a future that benefits both themselves and their communities.”
Sara Shaughnessy Chief Executive (NBPH) says the scholarships are designed to take some of the pressure off young learners, and that health and education are key elements for a secure future.
“This initiative reflects our shared commitment to nurturing future leaders and strengthening our community through education and hauora.”
The scholarships are open to Māori ākonga (learners) enrolled in NMIT programmes. Successful recipients will also have the chance to connect with NBPH for mentorship, gaining real-world insights and support throughout their study journey.
Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate not only academic potential but also their commitment to supporting their communities. Scholarship winners will be celebrated at NMIT’s annual scholarship awards ceremony.
Applications for the 2026 scholarships close at midnight on Sunday 15 March 2026. Students can apply online via the NMIT website and take the first step toward a supported and inspiring academic journey.
