Home can be a place, a person, a memory, or a feeling, and an NMIT student exhibition captures all of these possibilities through photography.

Home, a new student photography exhibition at The Gallery, Nelson City Framers, brings together work by Level 5 and 6 students studying the New Zealand Diploma in Arts and Design and the Bachelor of Arts and Media.

Created as part of a practical photography brief, the show asked students to look beyond home as a physical place and explore the people, memories, relationships, and experiences that shape a sense of belonging.

The result is a thoughtful and varied collection. Some students have focused on family, community, animals, and treasured memories, while others explore distance, cultural identity, social movements, and emotional connection.

The opening night drew strong support from students, friends, whānau, the wider community, and members of the public, giving the emerging photographers a chance to celebrate their work and share it beyond the classroom.

Nelson City Framers owner Greg MacKay played an important part in making the exhibition possible, generously providing the gallery space and supporting students with the printing of their works.

"Greg has been incredibly supportive of our students," says tutor Jess Shirley. "His encouragement has given them an invaluable opportunity to experience what it is like to exhibit their work in a real gallery setting."

“They have not only created the photographs but also designed the exhibition poster, planned the gallery layout, produced artwork labels, and helped install the show.”

"These experiences are an important part of their learning and help prepare them for future creative and professional opportunities.”

From early ideas through to final printed presentation, each student has been involved in shaping their work for a public audience. The exhibition reflects the value of learning by doing, with students building confidence in both photographic practice and exhibition preparation.

Home is open to the public at The Gallery, Nelson City Framers, until 3 July 2026.
