When Phuong made the decision to leave Cambodia and study in New Zealand, she was looking for a challenge and a chance to grow her independence. With a family connection in Nelson, she chose to enrol in the Bachelor of Accounting at NMIT, a decision that would set her on the path to a career with one of the world’s leading accounting firms.

Phuong admits she was initially surprised by the small class sizes at NMIT, but over time she came to see them as one of the biggest strengths of the programme.

“Having small classes meant I could really get to know my tutors,” Phuong says. “They had time to talk with us not just about the course material, but also about their own experiences in the industry.”

In her final year, Phuong undertook an industry-focused project as part of the Bachelor of Accounting programme where she interviewed Nelson business owners within the restaurant, food, and beverage industry on the transition toward a cashless economy. This applied learning approach ensures graduates leave with not just theoretical knowledge, but also real-world experience that employers value.

“Being able to apply everything I’d learned to an actual business environment helped build my confidence,” she says. “It also gave me something concrete to talk about in job interviews so I could show that I was ready to hit the ground running.”

That readiness, along with her determination and strong academic foundation, helped Phuong secure a highly competitive position with KPMG in Auckland, one of the globally recognised Big Four accounting firms with a presence in 143 countries.

Outside of study, Phuong found a welcoming and supportive community in Nelson. Living in a homestay just five minutes from campus gave her a sense of home while she adjusted to life in a new country.

“I’ve made great connections both at NMIT and in the local community,” she says. “It’s been such a supportive environment.”

Before stepping into her role at KPMG Phuong is taking time to celebrate her achievements with a trip to Switzerland and France.

For students considering the Bachelor of Accounting at NMIT, Phuong encourages them to take advantage of the close-knit learning environment and industry-informed teaching.

“The support I received at NMIT made a big difference,” she says. “It helped me grow both personally and professionally.”
