The result sees NMIT ranked first among the country's polytechnics on one of the Tertiary Education Commission's (TEC) key measures of educational performance(external link), highlighting the institute's strong learner outcomes. NMIT also achieved the highest course completion rate for Māori learners, with 83.6% of ākonga Māori successfully completing their courses.
Course completion measures the proportion of courses that learners successfully pass during their studies and is one of the key indicators the TEC uses to monitor educational performance across the tertiary sector.
Chief Executive Dr Caroline Seelig said the result reflects NMIT's continued focus on delivering high-quality education and supporting ākonga (learners) to succeed.
"Achieving the highest course completion rate among New Zealand's polytechnics is a really encouraging result," she says. "It reflects the commitment of our learners and the dedication of our academic and support teams."
"We're focused on creating an environment where learners are well supported, inspired to succeed, and strongly connected to industry and their communities."
Caroline says ākonga success remains central to NMIT's purpose, with the high course completion rate demonstrating that learners are progressing well through their studies and gaining valuable knowledge and skills.

The achievement adds to a strong period for NMIT, following recent growth in domestic and international enrolments(external link), and the institute's return to a financial surplus in 2025.
Caroline says the recognition provides encouragement as NMIT continues to strengthen its contribution to Te Tauihu and beyond.
"This national recognition reinforces our focus on continuous improvement. We'll keep working with our ākonga, kaimahi (staff), iwi, industry and community partners to ensure NMIT continues to deliver the education and skills our region needs."
