NMIT is proud to be a foundation partner in the newly opened Mahitahi Tasman hub in Māpua - a collaborative workspace designed to strengthen local industry, support innovation and connect businesses across the region.

The expansion of Mahitahi into Tasman reflects the way work is changing. With more people working remotely, running independent businesses or seeking flexible arrangements, the demand for high-quality shared workspaces closer to home continues to grow. Together with its Nelson site based at NMIT’s Hardy Street campus, Mahitahi now provides co-working memberships, casual hot desking and professional meeting rooms across the wider Nelson Tasman region.

For NMIT, the partnership is a natural extension of its role as a regional educator and industry partner. Working alongside Nelson Regional Development Agency (NRDA) and Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce, NMIT helps connect Mahitahi members directly into training opportunities, events, business support and growth initiatives. The partnership also creates valuable internship, research and placement opportunities, strengthening real-world learning experiences and building connections between Mahitahi businesses and NMIT learners.

Kate Neame, NMIT’s Director Demand Management, says the hub creates important pathways between education and enterprise.

“Supporting local industry is central to NMIT’s role in Te Tauihu. Mahitahi provides a space where entrepreneurs, small businesses and remote workers can collaborate and access the wider regional ecosystem. Our partnership with NRDA and the Chamber makes sense - together we’re strengthening the links between skills, innovation and business growth.”

Tasman has the highest proportion of residents working from home in New Zealand, according to Stats NZ. The Māpua hub, which has capacity for up to 100 people, responds to that shift, offering a professional, collaborative environment that supports productivity and wellbeing while reducing the need to commute.
