An NMIT internship helped John Dao launch his IT career in Wellington.

John’s goal of building a career in Information Technology led him to study at NMIT. Now working as a Cloud Developer in Wellington for New Zealand’s largest trade union - PSA, John, who originally hails from Vietnam, is living proof that applied learning, strong industry connections, and the right support can take you far.

John completed a Bachelor of Information Technology at NMIT, and during his final semester, he took part in a three-month internship with Nelson-based company BlueBerryIT

“The internship was a critical part of my studies,” says John. “It gave me real-world experience and a huge advantage over graduates from other universities who didn’t get that opportunity.”

Thanks to NMIT’s smaller class sizes and focus on applied learning, internships are built into the curriculum. John believes this feature sets the programme apart, for the real-world practical experience of an internship and the excellent support the smaller classes provide on campus.

“It’s very competitive in the bigger cities,” he says. “There are so many students trying to get internships, and not enough companies to take them on. But in Nelson, the ratio of IT companies to students seeking internships is much better and NMIT staff are incredibly supportive of you to succeed on campus and connect you with internships.”

John was particularly impressed by how innovative the Nelson tech scene is, with many companies embracing new technologies like AI. His time at BlueBerryIT gave him hands-on experience with the same platforms and technologies he now uses in his role at PSA.

“My job involves streamlining business processes and automating manual data processing using the Microsoft Power Platform,” says John. “I was already using those tools during my internship, which helped me secure the role with PSA.

More than just technical skills, the BlueBerryIT team offered John valuable workplace experience, support with job applications, and a recommendation that helped him in his job search.

Now based in Wellington, John is thriving, thanks to his hard work and the real-world learning he gained through his Bachelor of Information Technology at NMIT.
