Originally from Quebec, Canada, Frederick Laroche describes himself as a “jack of all trades.” Before making the leap into tech, he earned a diploma in farm management, worked on a farm, and completed a three-year firefighting programme at a technical college in Quebec. He then spent five years on the front lines as a firefighter - an experience that shaped his work ethic and ability to stay calm under pressure.

When Frederick, along with his partner and two-year-old child relocated to New Zealand, he saw it as the perfect time to reimagine his career path. He was drawn to Nelson and, after researching his study options, chose to enrol in the Bachelor of Information Technology at NMIT.

“I liked that NMIT focused on technical and applied learning. It felt like a good academic fit for me,” he says.
With a natural aptitude for analytical thinking and an interest in computers, the world of IT made perfect sense.

Frederick hasn’t wasted any time making the most of his student experience. Over the past two years at NMIT, he’s taken on roles as a peer support mentor and programme representative, giving back to the campus community while building leadership skills. He also secured a summer internship at Nelson-based company Trakk Assett.

“NMIT gives you room to explore beyond the classroom,” he says. “They’re clearly focused on preparing students to be work ready.”

His hands-on learning didn’t stop there. Frederick began working with Cawthron Institute, New Zealand's largest independent science organisation, which is based just two blocks from NMIT's Nelson campus. His role as a casual Software Developer has grown into his current part-time Data Engineer position, which he balances with his studies.

With such a busy lifestyle, Frederick acknowledges the support of those around him.

“I’ve had such a positive experience since moving to Nelson,” he says. “I’ve appreciated the support of so many people around me, especially my partner, Audrey-Anne. The focus I’ve had on my studies and career wouldn’t have been possible without her having my back through this busy time.”
