An NMIT graduate himself, Tom is passionate about connecting learners with meaningful careers in Marlborough's world-class wine industry.

"I am incredibly proud to be part of the NMIT Marlborough Campus team as the Work-Integrated Viticulture Tutor."

Tom completed a Merit Diploma in Viticulture and Wine Production at NMIT in 2001 before embarking on a career spanning more than two decades in vineyard management, workforce development and industry training.

He spent 21 years working in Marlborough's wine industry, including 18 years managing vineyards for medium and large wine businesses, before moving into vocational education as Marlborough-based Training Advisor for Horticulture Production (Wine Growing) with Primary ITO.

As NMIT's Work Integrated Viticulture Tutor, Tom works closely with students and industry partners to create meaningful workplace learning opportunities that help learners build practical skills, industry connections and confidence for successful careers.

“My journey in the grapevines has actually come full circle. I graduated from NMIT in 2001 with a Merit Diploma in Viticulture and Wine Production after relocating my family to Blenheim to chase a lifelong passion for wine.”

Originally from the Netherlands, Tom has called New Zealand home since 1974. Outside work, he enjoys sailing with his wife Maree, spending time with their three daughters and cruising the Marlborough Sounds whenever he can.
