For Robyn Feltham, social work is about building genuine connections with people and creating an environment where learners feel safe to be themselves.
As a Social Worker within NMIT's Learner Success | Wellbeing team, she supports learners to navigate life's challenges, remove barriers to study and discover their own ability to succeed.
Supporting you to succeed in a safe space
Whether a learner is experiencing personal challenges, financial stress, family pressures, mental wellbeing concerns, or simply isn't sure where to turn, Robyn provides a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where they can talk openly.
She believes that meaningful support begins with trust. By taking time to listen without judgement and understand each learner's unique circumstances, she helps learners identify practical solutions, build resilience and reconnect with their own strengths:
"Before we can solve problems, we need to build a genuine connection." Robyn says. "When learners know they're in a safe space where they'll be listened to and respected, that's when real growth and positive change can begin."
Robyn's goal is never to solve problems for learners, but to empower them to recognise their own strengths, make informed decisions and move forward with confidence.
A strengths-based approach
Throughout her career, Robyn has been passionate about helping people see possibilities rather than limitations. She believes creativity isn't limited to art or design- it's about finding new ways to approach challenges, solve problems and imagine different pathways forward.
She encourages learners to think creatively about their situations and reminds them that there is rarely only one way through a challenge. Robyn believes that "everyone has the capacity to be creative. Sometimes creativity is simply having the courage to look at a challenge differently and discover a path you hadn't seen before."
“Every learner already has strengths. My role is to help them recognise those strengths, trust themselves and realise they're more capable than they often believe.”
Qualifications and experience
Robyn is a qualified Social Worker with experience supporting individuals, families and communities across a range of settings. Her professional practice is grounded in empathy, respect and a strengths-based approach that empowers learners to achieve their goals.

For Robyn, the most rewarding part of her role is seeing learners grow in confidence and realise what they are capable of achieving.
"I love being part of a team that genuinely cares about learners." She says. "Seeing someone leave with greater confidence, hope and belief in themselves is what makes this work so rewarding."
Robyn enjoys working alongside colleagues who share a commitment to learner wellbeing and creating an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
Hobbies and interests
Alongside her mahi, which she is truly passionate about, Robyn enjoys spending time with family and friends, getting outdoors and making the most of the beautiful Nelson Tasman region.
