Chris Newth - Learner Success Assistant

As an NMIT graduate, Chris understands what it's like to be a learner. After growing up in Wakefield, he chose to stay close to home, in the beautiful Nelson Tasman region, and completed NMIT's Bachelor of Media and Arts, graduating in 2014.

Following roles in hospitality, retail and customer service, Chris joined Team NMIT in 2022. He was drawn to the opportunity to make a genuine difference by helping people achieve their education and career goals.

How Chris helps learners at NMIT

Chris is often one of the first people prospective learners meet when exploring study at NMIT. Having worked in Information and Enrolments and as a Study Navigator, he has extensive knowledge of NMIT's programmes, services and learner support.

Whether someone is choosing a programme, navigating enrolment or simply doesn't know where to start, Chris enjoys listening, answering questions and helping learners find the pathway that's right for them.

"I'm always happy to have a chat. Whether you know exactly what you want to study or you're still figuring it out, we'll work through it together and connect you with the right support."

He understands that every learner's situation is different and enjoys helping people find flexible study options that fit around work, family and other commitments.

“One of the best parts of my job is seeing learners grow in confidence - from making that first enquiry to celebrating their success at graduation.”

Supporting learners from their first conversation through to graduation is one of the most rewarding aspects of Chris' role.

Qualifications and experience

Chris holds a Bachelor of Media and Arts from NMIT. Alongside supporting learners, he also uses his creative skills to design Learner Success campus posters and event material, as well as content for NMIT's student social media channels, Campus Vibes(external link).

His background in customer service has given him strong communication, problem-solving and relationship-building skills that he brings to every learner interaction.

What makes Chris tick

Chris loves seeing learners, from all walks of life, achieve their goals, and values the supportive culture at NMIT.

"Every learner's journey is different, and that's what makes this role so rewarding. I enjoy getting to know people, understanding what matters to them and helping them find the best pathway forward."

"If I don't know the answer, I'll find someone who does. My goal is to make sure every learner knows they're supported and never has to figure things out on their own." Chris says.

"There is so much support available at NMIT. All you have to do is ask, and there will always be someone here who wants to help you succeed."

Outside of work

In his spare time, Chris enjoys board games, brunch with friends and adding to his collections of LEGO, seashells, rocks and colognes. He's also a keen gamer, with The Sims remaining a long-time favourite.
