Move beyond kia ora

If you're just starting your journey to learn te reo, Level 1 is the perfect place to begin. You do not need any prior knowledge or experience in the language. Our course will help you start and establish a strong foundation for your learning.

Throughout this course, you will be introduced to key aspects of te reo, including pronunciation, mihimihi (greetings), and introducing yourself. By the end of this course, you will have a solid foundation in Te Reo Māori.

You will also learn:

  • Colours
  • Numbers
  • Counting people and objects
  • Giving commands or instructions
  • Describing people and objects
  • Karakia (prayer)
  • Waiata (songs)
  • Whakataukī (proverbs)
  • Kīwaha (sayings)

If you have not studied te reo Māori with us before, you will need to come in for an interview so we can ensure you are studying at the right level.

To find out more about the different levels of te reo Māori study available and where you should begin your studies, come in for a kōrero (chat) in Te Toki Pakohe (D Block) or email us: maoristudies@nmit.ac.nz
