Styling for a cause
Superstar stylists from NMIT’s Certificate in Hairdressing provided show-stealing looks for performers at the biennial Dancing for a Cause event.
NMIT was proud to support the 2025 Dancing for a Cause event by lending the talent of our Certificate in Hairdressing students. Dancing for a Cause is a biennial event that raises money for the Nelson Tasman Hospice. NMIT’s learners contributed to this night of glitz and glamour by creating amazing looks for contestants in a real-life application of their course work.
“It was a great environment to put us in, to get us all out of our comfort zone. To do something we wouldn’t ordinarily have an opportunity to do,” shares Mel, one of the four students who attended the event.
The opportunity to support this event provided a great chance for the learners to work as a team and create a closer bond with their fellow classmates. They worked in a small team alongside industry professionals.
“We got to know each other a little bit on a different level than when you work in a classroom,” says Mel. “It was also nice to work with people that are in the industry and could share their expertise.”
Working off photos provided by the stylists at the event was a change from the client works the learners had experienced so far at NMIT’s Head Zone Training Salon.
“It was a good chance to work off a photo. We tend to just do what you have to do on a client, so it was a really good real life salon experience," shares Jade.
For these learners, the experience of supporting Dancing for a Cause was further reinforcement of their choice to study hairdressing and study at NMIT.
“Getting to know the clients, it’s been a whole learning experience, not just about hair. Being in a small classroom and getting to know everyone, they all become your friends.”, adds Jade
“The campus here is really really, nice, the people are great, the tutors are great. I love it”, Rebecca shares.
"This is something I have always wanted to do, and I wanted to be a role model for my children – to show them it doesn't matter how old you are, whatever you want to do, just go and do it.", concludes Mel.
