"The work centres around our connection to personal possessions and includes the themes of object collection and meaning, surrender and exchange. For this installation, I created nine necklaces made out of personal possessions given to me by members of the public." Bachelor of Arts and Media student Katie Pascoe
In exchange, I surrendered nine necklaces made from my own personal possessions. There are several uncertainties embedded in the work which offer interesting challenges including responding to different objects and materials and the reliance of audience participation for the project to move forward.
I use a wide variety of media to make the jewellery including found objects, textiles and metal and am inspired by French philosophy: ‘we love objects to think with and we think with objects we love’.
Without money governing the exchange, value takes on a whole new meaning - personal significance and narrative play a far greater role. It is these ideas that hold and intrigue me with the whole process of exchange.
