Each year, NMIT offers a scholarship towards fees to one outstanding student from each secondary school in Te Tauihu who is enrolling at NMIT.

Senior leaders from NMIT have been attending awards ceremonies at all 17 secondary schools across the region to present these scholarships, welcome students to NMIT, and celebrate their achievements.

The School Leaver Award celebrates the talent and promise within the Nelson–Marlborough region and recognises students who want to step into their futures close to home.

Kate Neame, Director Demand Management at NMIT says it’s a privilege to support school leavers who want to study in their home region.

“With strong nationally and internationally recognised qualifications, NMIT will give them the academic experience to reinvest locally or take their talents across Aotearoa and beyond,” she says. We’re excited that these exceptional young people have chosen us for their learning journey, and that we can recognise their achievements in this way.”

NMIT Executive Director Olivia Hall is pictured here with Nayland College’s Izzie Payne, who will be starting a Bachelor of Nursing at NMIT in 2026. Izzie was selected for the School Leaver Award for her significant community involvement as a dedicated St John volunteer. She is the youngest first responder in the Top of the South and was named St John’s District Cadet of the Year. As a volunteer, she teaches children first aid and helps organise and lead courses at the St John’s Youth Camp.

This award is just one example of NMIT’s ongoing commitment to nurturing local talent and strengthening the region’s future workforce. By supporting students to begin their higher education journey right here in Te Tauihu, NMIT continues to invest in the people who will shape our communities, industries, and shared future.
