Taking the leap into fitness
Chloe’s journey started early. She knew traditional university wasn’t for her and decided to skip Year 13, diving straight into fitness through NMIT’s Trades Academy. “I was really into my sport, and after doing Trades Academy in Year 12, I realised I didn’t need to wait—I could just get started.” With expert tutors guiding her and a hands-on learning approach, she found herself thriving in a space where academics met practical experience.
From student to industry professional
Now, Chloe is gearing up to lead reformer Pilates classes at a pioneering women’s wellness studio, offering both Pilates and contrast therapy with saunas and ice plunges. “It’s the first of its kind in New Zealand, which is really exciting,” she says.
She credits her time at NMIT for giving her the skills and confidence to step into this role. “The tutors here really care. They know your name, they push you to be your best, and they make sure you’re prepared for the industry.”
Why choose fitness at NMIT?
For anyone considering fitness studies, Chloe has one message: “100% do it.” Unlike big universities where students can feel like just another face in the crowd, NMIT offers a personalised learning experience. “I wasn’t the biggest fan of sitting in a classroom all day, but this degree had the perfect mix of practical and academic learning. It gave me everything I needed to succeed.”
Growing in confidence & skill
Reflecting on her journey, Chloe has seen huge personal growth. “Looking back at when I first started, I’ve come so far—not just in my fitness skills, but in my self-confidence, body image, and understanding of a healthy lifestyle.”
Her studies also opened her eyes to the diversity of the fitness industry. “You work with athletes, people recovering from illness, and those with disabilities. It makes you realise fitness is for everyone, and that’s really powerful.”
Teaching the next generation
Recently, Chloe returned to campus to run a mat Pilates session for first-year students, giving them a hands-on look at instructing techniques. “It was great to show them how group fitness works and help them develop their own leadership styles,” she explains.
As she steps into the next chapter of her career, Chloe’s journey is proof that with the right support, the right environment, and a passion for movement, the possibilities are endless.
