The intention of the mihi whakatau at NMIT is to welcome manuhiri (visitors / guests), kaimahi (staff) and ākonga (students) in a formal and traditional welcoming ceremony, celebrating the beginning or next chapter of your learning journey.

The intention of the mihi whakatau at NMIT is to welcome manuhiri (visitors / guests), kaimahi (staff) and ākonga (students) in a formal and traditional welcoming ceremony, celebrating the beginning or next chapter of your learning journey.

It is rich with symbolism and follows a special process, ultimately uniting two separate groups: tangata whenua (hosts) and manuhiri (guests), together as one.

Whilst parts of a mihi whakatau may vary according to the occasion, Māori language remains a key feature.
