Charlie Boyle
With a lifelong passion for food and more than 15 years’ experience in senior kitchen roles, Charlie brings a wealth of real-world knowledge to NMIT’s cookery programme.

Born in the UK, Charlie discovered his love of hospitality early, washing dishes and prepping vegetables at just 13 in a bustling commercial kitchen. As a teenager he studied Hospitality Management while completing an apprenticeship at a locally renowned fine-dining restaurant, laying the foundations for a dynamic career in hospitality.

Throughout his twenties Charlie travelled and cooked his way across South-East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, immersing himself in new cuisines and techniques. Since settling in Nelson he has managed and led kitchens across a wide spectrum, from cafés and bistros to fine dining, winery cellar doors and tapas bars. Several of the businesses he has been part of have received local nominations and awards, reflecting the high standards of the teams he has worked with and led. These experiences have helped him build the broad and contemporary skill set he now shares with his students.

Charlie has developed strong relationships with chefs, restaurant owners, and food producers throughout the region, connections that enrich his teaching and give students valuable insight into Nelson’s thriving food scene.

In 2024 Charlie began teaching, bringing his hands-on industry experience into the classroom. His focus is on giving students the confidence, creativity and professionalism they need to thrive in today’s fast-paced food industry.

“I want students to leave our programme with both solid technical skills and a curiosity to keep learning. Cooking is a craft and a career that can take you anywhere in the world.”
