Ben has about 12 years ESL/EFL teaching experience, working mainly with Korean and Chinese University students.

Ben has worked at NMIT since early 2015. He made the move to Nelson for the lifestyle the region offers and the schooling opportunities for his 2 young children. He has about 12 years ESL/EFL teaching experience, working mainly with Korean and Chinese University students in South Korea (but he also did a six month teaching stint at a language school in central London, England teaching nationalities from all over the world).

His original qualifications were in the area of Geography/Tourism, however, he gained his CELTA (grade B) from Budapest, Hungary in 2009. He loved the valuable practical teaching aspect of the CELTA course, especially the opportunity to apply new teaching methods to a mix of keen Eastern European students.

Ben is an active teacher who likes to bring energy and create enthusiasm in the classroom. “Making the students feel comfortable in the class environment and listening to their needs is important to me. Helping them with practical language and study skills is rewarding”. He particularly enjoys teaching the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) program and seeing the student’s progress through the steps of this course.

Ben really enjoys the ‘vibe’ at NMIT and hopes to continue teaching here for a long time. He is planning to continue his professional development by starting a Masters degree in TESOL in 2018.
