Work, family AND study? NMIT’s flexible learning options make upskilling easy

Julia Mallett was seeking a change of direction when she discovered a Career Development programme at NMIT that ticked all her boxes.

It wasn’t a decision she took lightly. As a mother with a part-time job living in Christchurch, she needed a programme that would work with her busy lifestyle.

She also had an Honours degree in political science and didn’t want to commit to another multi-year degree programme.

“I spent quite a bit of time looking at options to formalise my interest in Career Development and the Graduate Certificate in Career Development at NMIT really did tick all the boxes in terms of programme length, course topics and the mix of practical and academic skills,” Julia says.

The 20-week programme is designed for graduates who are looking to move into career planning and development with students, clients or organisations.

NMIT’s flexible learning options, including distance and online study, meant the programme was the obvious choice for Julia.

“Being in Christchurch the long distance nature of the programme was great, it was possible to work slightly ahead leading up to school holidays which allowed me to stay on track.”

Julia says the support from NMIT, including refresher courses on academic writing and referencing and easy access to tutors online, was “so valuable” and made her return to study a breeze.

“I’d say to anyone thinking of taking the programme to do it, it’s a really good mix of practical and academic skills and you’ll really enjoy it,” she says

“Now that I have the qualification I’m hoping to get more permanent work in Career Development and hopefully work with people who have additional support needs.”
