First year free tertiary education

First year free tertiary education

What does the Government policy on Fees Free first year tertiary education mean for you?

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is part of the Government plan providing free fees for the first year of tertiary study for domestic students on programmes level 3 and above.

This is for more than just school leavers. Anyone (there is no age limit) who has not had the opportunity to study at tertiary level before, now can do so for their first year.

You probably have some questions about how this all works. We have put together this handy guide.

Am I eligible?

To find out if you can benefit from Fees Free in your first year of study, check out the Government's Fees Free(external link) website.

If I am not eligible but am a domestic student, does NMIT offer any other scholarships?

Yes NMIT has scholarships that you may be eligible for, even if you do not qualify for the Fees Free opportunity. Check out our scholarship section.

We will also be reviewing the scholarships in the new year with our scholarship partners.

Where can I find out more information about the first year of tertiary Fees Free offer?

The Government has written a series of FAQs(external link) that should cover many of your questions. It has information on part time study, if you have studied a tertiary course while at secondary school and more.

What sort of saving will this be for me over my qualification?

It really depends. NMIT has a number of one year certificate programmes so you could complete your entire tertiary study for free and head out into the workforce with a tertiary qualification in your kete.

Some of our Diploma programmes  are one year, while others are two years - meaning your fees are half what they would have been a year ago.

Degree programmes will mean 1/3 of the price.

How do I make the most of the first year of tertiary Fees Free offer?

Tertiary education is about taking the first step into the career you want. You can learn more about different career paths, what the work will look like and how much you will get paid, on the Careers NZ(external link) website.

At NMIT our tutors care about the quality of teaching and your learner journey so you have the best possible chance of success.

Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics are expected to have increased numbers from this offer, so to secure your place at NMIT, make sure you apply now.

As with anything in life, how long this offer will be available is hard to know. Make it count, choose wisely and work hard.

How do I apply for the Fees Free offer?

You need to enter your National Student Number (NSN) on the Fees Free website(external link) to check your eligibility status.
