Young mum forges new career path

Certificate in Business
A desire to spend more quality time with her children motivated Dearna Leckie to enrol at NMIT and embark on a new career path.

The young mum, based in Blenheim, recently completed the New Zealand Certificate in Business (Administration and Technology) Level 3 course at NMIT and walked straight into an office job with “perfect hours”.

She had been working at a local bakery for seven years, but after having her two sons, now aged four and one, she struggled with the long hours and working weekends and public holidays.

“I really needed a change in career,” Dearna says.

“Working weekends and public holidays made it hard to have weekends away with the family or family time in general.”

She decided to enrol in the Certificate in Business at NMIT to gain the skills and knowledge that would give her more career options.

The course is designed for people who want to kickstart an administrative career or formalise existing skills with a tertiary-level qualification.

You can choose to enrol in the Employment Scholarship Programme (one year, part-time with several start dates throughout the year), or the Internship Programme (17 weeks, starting in February or July). Both delivery modes include a combination of work experience and set classes.

You can also complete the course online.

Dearna says the NMIT tutors were “amazing” and the course was flexible and “family friendly” for parents who have limited time to study.

“It was only two short days a week which was really helpful as at the time my youngest boy was only 8 months old.”

Studying at NMIT has equipped her with the computer and administration skills she needed to work in a modern office environment.

“It has also given me the confidence I needed to even apply for the position I am doing now.”

Dearna is now employed at NMIT Marlborough as a Campus Administrator with hours that allow her to spend more time with her kids.

“I am able to achieve any challenges put before me confidently and help others whether it be students or colleagues.”
