Second chance to study nursing

Second chance to study nursing

Sam Clegg always wanted his childhood love of science to be part of a career that would help people in need.

The problem was Sam wasn’t a big fan of school.

“I left school because it was somewhere I just didn’t want to be,” Sam says. “But I still really wanted to get into higher education and get a good qualification.”

Sam’s life changing decision to enrol in NMIT’s New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (SCP) enabled him to continue his studies and a year on from completing the Certificate, Sam is now studying for his Bachelor of Nursing.

“The SCP course was just perfect because it gave me University Entrance and really prepared me much better than school ever could for doing nursing,” says Sam.

Sam says his tutors play an extremely important role in enabling him to be able to work towards and achieve his goals.

“The tutors really want you to succeed and take an actual interest in you. They aren’t just focused on delivering the material and then off you go… They cater it to what you need.”

The New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Health) is designed to improve academic study skills and prepare potential students to study towards a Bachelor in Nursing.

Sam says that if you are interested in nursing to definitely consider doing the SCP at NMIT.

“It teaches you how to write an essay and gives you some science background. It’s a really good first step to nursing.”

Sam plans to use his nursing skills to help people in other areas of the world once he finishes studying for his degree.

“I’d really like to practice nursing all over the world and especially in places less fortunate then here in New Zealand. Ultimately I’d really love to work in disaster relief.”
