Local business takes on NMIT Mechanical Engineering apprentices

Workload increases due to a buoyant local economy has seen Trinder Engineers sign up 19 apprentices through the NMIT Managed Apprenticeship programme this year.

They are looking at taking on a further three Mechanical Engineering apprentices to take the total number across the two Trinder sites in the region to 21.

Managing Director, Kerry Hill, says "Our clients business is growing particularly in the primary industry sector. Normally we would take only 12 to 15 a year,"

He says working with local provider, NMIT, allows them to have input into the training so it is tailored to what is needed in the Nelson region. This is a win-win because it also means the students are gaining the skills industry needs.

NMIT has run managed apprenticeships for over 20 years but last year was the first year they were available in mechanical engineering. NMIT offers Managed Apprenticeships in Construction and Automotive Engineering across the Top of the South region. NMIT also offers a popular Pre-Trade Mechanical Engineering programme.
