After graduating, Gillan spent two years Colombia as part of Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa, a programme connecting Māori with Indigenous communities across the Asia-Pacific. Before, returning to Nelson and now works as a Regional Advisor for Te Puni Kōkiri - the Ministry of Māori Development.
"I've made plenty of good friends here at NMIT," Gillan says. "The smaller class sizes make it easy to engage in the classroom. You can have some proper discussions, and the tutors have a lot industry experience for context."
