This course is intended to provide the knowledge required to enable personnel to appreciate and understand ship security issues.

Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to contribute to improved maritime security through heightened awareness and the ability to recognize threats and to respond appropriately.

Upon completion of this course, you will receive an STCW Seafarer Security Awareness Certificate. The training meets the requirements of STCW Section VI/6 Table A-VI/6-1.

Study online 

This is an online course which can be completed from anywhere you have an internet connection. Computers are available on the NMIT Nelson and Marlborough campus' if you do not have your own device. Please note the usual time the time to complete this course from your initial application, to issue of your certificate is 1-2 weeks. You will be given access to the training material for at least two months, please talk to us if you require additional time to complete.

Course Aim

This course is intended to provide the knowledge required to enable personnel without designated security duties to enhance ship security.  Students who successfully complete this course should be able to contribute to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness and the ability to recognize security threats and to respond appropriately.  This course meets the requirements of STCW 1978 as amended, Section A-III/1.

  • Topic 1:  Ship Security Roles and Responsibilities
  • Topic 2:  Security Levels
  • Topic 3:  Emergency Procedure and Contingency Plans
  • Topic 4:  Threat Recognition and Response

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of:

  • Interpret the meaning and the consequential requirements of different maritime security levels
  • Demonstrate knowledge of maritime security emergency procedures and contingency plans
  • Demonstrate understanding of potential maritime security threats, including weapons, dangerous substances and devices
  • Recognise on a non-discriminatory basis, characteristics and behavioural patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security
  • Show awareness of techniques used to circumvent security measures

Please note your STCW certificate may take up to two weeks to be issued to you upon successful completion of the course.
