Be a student for a day

It is easy to imagine what it is like to be an NMIT student, but just as easy to get it wrong. If you are planning to study with us when you finish school then come and be a 'Student For a Day' on campus to find out the truth.

What happens on the day?

On the day you’ll be greeted by the tutor. You may get a buddy who is a current NMIT student studying in the area you’re planning on studying.

You will attend lectures, classes and workshops, will be able to ask questions and meet other tutors. You also have the opportunity to request a study support session, or to meet the student support team. Depending on the area you are interested in studying, your day's activities will vary according to what current students are doing.

What programmes are available?

Come and experience:

  • Nursing
  • Business
  • Business Administration
  • Information Technology
  • Arts and Media
  • Interior Design
  • Social Work
  • Tourism and Travel
  • Carpentry
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Automotive Engineering
  • Fitness
  • Adventure Tourism (Please check for availability)
  • Superyacht Crewing
  • Hairdressing
  • Beauty Therapy
  • Aquaculture
  • Hospitality and Cookery.

What will it cost me?

It is free. You need to arrange your own transport and remember to bring your lunch (there is an on campus café).

Both NMIT and your school’s career advisor need to consider whether you’ll be a good match for this programme. This is the criteria they use to make their decision:

  • Are you genuinely interested in this programme?
  • Do or will you meet the entry requirements for the programme?
  • Is there a Tertiary Pathways (STAR) course or Trades Academy programme that would meet your needs?
  • Have you filled in the enrolment form and gained school and parental permission to be absent from school for a day?

How do I enrol?

What happens next?

Your careers advisor will assess whether you're suitable for Student For A Day and whether you meet the criteria, then they’ll pass on that information to us.

Soon after that, our NMIT School Liaison will make contact with your careers advisor with information about what to expect from the day. Once all this has happened, NMIT will send you out an email or letter to confirm everything.

  • The date, day and time of the programme day
  • The name of the tutor you’ll be seeing, and
  • Where to come in the morning.

If you have already left school and are genuinely interested in participating in Student for a Day please contact us.
