Screenplays can find their way on to the stage, cinema, TV, YouTube, streaming services and other online media (some which haven’t even been invented yet).

To receive the Scriptwriting Studio award(external link) you must complete two courses; Short Scripts and Developing Long Scripts.

In Short Scripts, you will develop characters, situations and dialogue, and study various ‘short script’ productions, from TV commercials through to short films and plays.

In Developing Long Scripts, you will explore the principles and processes of writing a long script for a determined and self- purpose and platform.

What will I learn in these courses?

Scriptwriting: Short Scripts – Semester 1

In this course you will explore the principles and processes of writing short scripts for a variety of purposes and platforms including, but not exclusive to, the cinema, stage, TV, YouTube and other online media. During your study you will engage in researching and producing short script outputs, developing characters, situations and dialogue, and studying various ‘short script’ productions, from TV commercials through to short films and plays, applying the learning and knowledge you gain from analysing these published or produced works to the short script outputs you produce.

Topics may include:

  • Scripts of up to 15 minutes in length, including but not exclusive to, short films, videos, TV/film commercials/ plays/radio dramas/games scripts
  • Principles of scriptwriting - including layout of scripts and the use of script-formatting software
  • Analysing and evaluating short scripts from a range of media drawn from short film, theatre, radio and games scripts
  • Planning and drafting short scripts
  • Re-writing and resolving short scripts

Scriptwriting: Developing Long Scripts – Semester 2

In this course you will explore the principles and processes of writing a long script for a determined and self- purpose and platform, drawn from but not exclusive to, the cinema, stage, TV, YouTube and other online media. During your study you will engage in researching and producing a long script, developing characters, dialogue and situations and commencing, at the very least, a long script project. You will also study various ‘long script’ productions, particularly films and plays, applying the learning and knowledge you gain from analysing these published or produced works to the long script writing you produce.

Topics may include:

  • Scripted outputs that exceed 15 minutes in length
  • Writing treatments
  • Developing ideas
  • Working collaboratively; pitching a script; developing a production
  • Planning and drafting long scripts for a range of media
  • Developing, re-writing and resolving long scripts for a range of media
