Grow your capability to support work health and safety improvement. Become a SafePlus Assessor with this NZQA micro-credential developed with WorkSafe.

If you are a HASANZ-registered health and safety professional, this micro-credential is the new, WorkSafe-recognised path for you to become a SafePlus Assessor. You will learn and demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to deliver the SafePlus Onsite Assessment and Advisory Service.

The micro-credential can be completed online over a period of 12 weeks, making it convenient and accessible for busy professionals.

On completion, assessors will be able to support organisations in implementing strategies for ongoing change using SafePlus, to make work safer and healthier in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

SafePlus is complementary to other health and safety assessment tools. Its focus is on behaviours, beliefs and attitudes within a business that shape how work occurs.

On the successful completion of this micro-credential, you will be able to:

Explain the benefits, principles and components of the SafePlus assessment approach
Apply a holistic approach to assessing health and wellbeing at work using Te Whare Tapa Whā during a SafePlus onsite assessment.
Scope and prepare a SafePlus onsite assessment plan for a simulated Aotearoa, New Zealand organisation
Assess the health and safety performance of a simulated organisation in Aotearoa, New Zealand, using the SafePlus assessment approach.
Synthesise and present evidence obtained during a SafePlus onsite assessment
Recommend actions in response to findings of the SafePlus onsite assessment of a simulated organisation in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Entry requirements

A current HASANZ membership valid until the end of the programme you are enrolled in.
(if your HASANZ membership is due to renew during the course, you can enrol. However, to be awarded the qualification on successful completion, you must show valid HASANZ membership)
Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline.

English language requirements

If English or te reo Māori is not the applicant’s first language, applicants will need to provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Table:(external link)

IELTS 6.0 Academic (no lower than 5.5 in each band)

Achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance

Note: Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact NMIT for an assessment.

How much time should I allow to study?

Over twelve weeks, you will need to complete 150 hours of self-paced learning. Please allow for 12.5 hours per week to study.

What does online learning look like?

Once you are enrolled, you will receive access to Moodle, the online learning platform (or website), where you will find all of the course material and the activities for the micro-credential.

Are there exams or assessments?

There are no exams for this micro-credential. It is assessed by each candidate submitting a portfolio that is created bit by bit throughout the course, with the final part being the submission of a SafePlus Assessor Report.

You will have the opportunity to receive feedback on each of your portfolio tasks before final submission.

To help you succeed, your tutor will assist you with the portfolio task requirements and timelines. All you need to do is follow the online course and engage with your tutor.

Activities and assessments may involve:

preparing contracts
preparing and conducting an interview

Who can apply for RPL for He Ara Matatau?

RPL for this micro-credential is available only to people who were on WorkSafe’s SafePlus assessor register on 28 February 2022 and are HASANZ registered health and safety professionals.
