This programme will teach you to communicate in most situations with some independence and fluency so as to take part in everyday life, in a workplace and/or for academic study. Learner independence is encouraged through the use of online and project-based learning which develop generic skills that are transferable to work and study, such as computer skills, time management and team work.

You can also do this programme in two parts, completing the two halves at different times, if this fits better with your requirements.

Completion of this programme can help you gain entry into other NMIT programmes that require an IELTS score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5. At NMIT we test your English language skills when you arrive, so we can get you started at the best level for your learning. If you qualify for this Level 4 programme, you could be up to speed in just 16 weeks (plus study break/s). Academic requirements:

Academic Requirement for entry into the New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 4 is

the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3)
or equivalent(external link) skills and knowledge.

Note: International applicants must also comply with Immigration NZ requirements. All admissions are subject to the approval of the Head of Department or delegate. The entry processes comply with NMIT’s admissions and enrolments section within the Academic Statute.

The programme has an integrated approach to developing core language skills. Graduates of this qualification will have the English language skills to:

Apply English language knowledge in practice corresponding to Level 4
Demonstrate presentation and public speaking skills
Select and employ appropriate English Language expressions in familiar and unfamiliar situations
Demonstrate the knowledge, attitude and skills required to successfully progress to the next academic level or into the workplace
