NMIT degree students set for bonus

NMIT degree students set for bonus

School leavers starting a degree programme next year at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) could be in for a double bonus in the wake of the Government’s zero-fee first year study policy.

Not only are top-of-the-south and West Coast school leavers in line for the first year-free deal, but will also gain the benefit of NMIT’s existing half-a-degree-for-free scholarship.

Director of Marketing Virginia Watson says details aren’t certain until a Government announcement on its policy, including eligibility criteria, but it could mean an extra $3,000 saving for NMIT under-graduate students.

She says NMIT’s half-a-degree-for free scheme may be redesigned to take in the Government’s new policy, but NMIT want to retain an incentive for local school leavers to stay in the region and study with NMIT.

Other NMIT-funded awards will likely be impacted by the new Government policy. Eight $2,000 scholarships for secondary school leavers, that have just been awarded for the 2018 year, would be honoured for the second year of study instead of the first.

She says the word on the street is that some students are holding off on enrolling for programmes next year while they wait for a definitive announcement on eligibility for the Government’s zero-fees policy.

“We’re being told to carry on enrolling for 2018 as normal, and the Government will release details in due course. The Government is projecting a national increase in first year enrolments of 15% so our advice is to apply now so as not to miss out on placements in degree programmes or other certificate or diploma courses, and any new entitlements will be applied in due course”.
