NMIT celebrates first Masters graduates

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) celebrated their first cohort of Master of Applied Management graduates this week.

Two international students Unmesha Cherukunnanmare Veetil and Akanksha Mulgaonkar graduated with the new qualification during May.

The two students are both from India and both started their Masters degree with NMIT in February 2018. The fifteen-month Master of Applied Management (MAM) programme was developed by NMIT following significant consultation with both employers and potential students and the focus is on learning that can be directly applied within a business environment. It was this tailored and targeted approach to course development that attracted both Unmesha and Akanksha to NMIT which is one of only three of New Zealand’s sixteen institutes of technology/polytechnics (ITPs) offering the Master of Applied Management qualification.

Unmesha is from Kerala in Southern India and she has spent her career in an education environment, primarily as a lecturer in India. Her decision to undertake the Masters qualification at NMIT was based on a desire to complete a broader management programme that offered future opportunities in a commercial environment. Unmesha’s research project was on the cultural adjustment and adaptation of Indian International Students working In New Zealand with a focus on cultural intelligence and work based learning.

Akanksha is from Mumbai and her research project was on the relationship between cultural intelligence and employee engagement with a focus on two Indian Private Banks. Akanksha was recommended the NMIT programme because of international recognition of standards. Akanksha came from a career in private banking in India and intends to work in New Zealand before eventually returning home.

Both students have enjoyed the Nelson region as a place to study with a great climate, friendly people and classes with New Zealand domestic and other international students. They also acknowledge the support of academic staff at NMIT and the high expectations and academic rigour of the postgraduate programme.

“More students of the Master of Applied Management will continue to graduate over this year with our Masters qualification gaining significant traction as an academic offering. There is valuable acknowledgement among students of the ability to apply the knowledge directly into a commercial situation. Each group of students must complete a series of compulsory courses that includes Critical Issues in Management, Design Thinking and Innovative Entrepreneurship, Managing in a Digital World and Leadership and Managing Talent. Each student then completes elective courses that can be tailored to student needs. These can include aquaculture, logistics and supply chain and IT security. They also undertake a research project to complete their qualification. We are very pleased with the international recognition that the qualification is receiving and anticipate increased numbers of international students as the qualification is bedded in,” said Dr Susannah Roddick, Curriculum Director.
