NMIT bridge building winners

For the second year NMIT has run a Secondary School Bridge Building competition

This competition is open to students in Years 11, 12 or 13 at local secondary schools. The challenge is to construct a bridge out of a set amount of dowel and glue that is lightweight, but can also hold the largest load of weights. Over 20 teams of Students and Staff from Garin College, Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls and Motueka High School competed in the event.

The bridges stood up to the test. The bridges are tested until they can hold no more weight and break. The winning bridge weighing just over 250gms and holding nearly 52kgs of weight before it snapped. The design and construction of the bridges had improved from last year's competition.

Garin College was the winner on the day taking away both first and third prizes, as well as the best designed bridge as judged by Snow Edgar from Taylors Contracting and Debbie Hogan, NMIT Civil Engineering Tutor.

A big thank you to the Civil Engineering industry representatives who also set up a display of machinery and vehicles used in Civil Engineering for students to have a look around and ask questions about a career as a Civil Engineer.

NMIT's two year New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil Engineering) is a practical, hands on start to a career in civil engineering.

Next year's event will be bigger again with more schools looking to come on board and take home the impressive trophy.

Note: Many dowel bridges were harmed during this event.
