Become a homestay provider

Do you have a spare room and time to provide a homestay for an international student?

Every year, NMIT places hundreds of international students into local accommodation. At times we have more students than rooms. By becoming a homestay provider you will be helping overseas visitors experience the beauty of our land and at the same time benefit culturally and financially yourself.

Students who are happy and relaxed in their homestay are able to study and achieve their full potential. They make friends, are happy to learn our culture, will enjoy a variety of activities and have fun exploring Nelson and sometimes further afield.

Our friendly ‘kiwi kindness’ helps international students get through the first difficult weeks as they adjust to a new culture, strange accents, different values, foreign food, weather, people, houses, teaching methods, rules and ways of doing things.

Having an international student is a great way to learn about new cultures

We are currently seeking families in Nelson or Blenheim.

We look forward to hearing from you if you are able to offer them:

  • A home that is within easy walking distance of the campus or transport for students to and from the campus for the first 3 weeks and help with catching public transport afterwards,
  • A safe, supportive, and welcoming environment in a kiwi family setting,
  • An interest in learning about their country and culture,
  • Airport pick up and drop off.

There are two homestay options - full board and independent.

Full board homestays for students under 18 years of age

In addition to the full board homestay offerings, you will need to also provide:

  • Week day daily packed lunch
  • Access to a telephone (excluding toll calls)
  • Laundry (optional)

Rental income per week

Independent homestays

Some students prefer to be fully independent and require accommodation only. You can provide a room with no meals at a lower weekly cost.

Rental income per week

A homestay arrangement will be for 8 weeks or longer. You will be advised of the students arrival and departure dates.

There is a payment/notice period of two (2) weeks if students wish to leave prior to their arranged departure date.

Rental income

Rent should be paid two weeks in advance, firstly in cash direct from the student on arrival and then by automatic payment – your will need to provide your bank account details.

Students continue to pay the full price of the homestay if you are away from the homestay for less than five consecutive days. For holidays over 5 days in length, 50 percent of the standard homestay rate is charged. You are not required to store their belongings if they are not paying at least 50% of the homestay fee (by arrangement).
