Introductory Carpentry

Purpose

This course will introduce you to aspects of the carpentry trade

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course you will:

  • be introduced to elementary carpentry skills.

Entry Requirements

  • Must be Year 10 or 11

Requirements of Successful Completion

  • Must have completed 100 percent of course

Carpentry Skills

Purpose

This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to use items of personal protective equipment for basic woodworking.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify items of personal protective equipment
  • Use items of personal protective equipment for basic woodworking
  • Identify portable electric tools 

Entry Requirements

  • Secondary school students must be in year 11 or above

Requirements of Successful Completion

  • Students must demonstrate they have met all learning outcomes by successfully completing all the assessment requirements

Hand Tools for Trades

Purpose

The purpose of this course is to provide you with the elementary skills and knowledge to identify hand tools, use these tools in a safe manner and maintain carpentry hand tools.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge of carpentry hand tools in the following ways:

  • Use of tools is described in terms of the work operations to be completed
  • Care and maintenance of tools are described as recommended by manufacturer
  • Use of tools is described in terms of safety requirements

Career Partnership Course


Carpentry and Joinery Skills

Purpose

The purpose of this course is to provide students with carpentry and joinery skills and knowledge through a project-based curriculum, allowing them to pursue further training or employment in a trades area.

Course Overview

This course can be offered as a subject at school. This requires an agreement between NMIT and your secondary school.

Entry Requirements

  • Individual secondary school to set academic entry requirements for secondary school delivery of this course.

Requirements of Successful Completion

Students must:

  • Demonstrate they have met all compulsory learning outcomes, and
  • Demonstrate they have met learning outcomes associated with one of the elective Unit Standards (12932 or 12936), and
  • Attend at least 90% of scheduled classes
