NMIT’s School of Tourism, Hospitality and Wellbeing offer a range of courses relating to tourism, travel, cookery, hospitality, fitness, hair and beauty. All of the courses emphasise applied learning focusing on delivering service to customers, clients or visitors.
Aspiring adventure guides can choose the Diploma in Adventure Tourism Leadership, delivered by experienced tutors with a love of the outdoors. Adventure Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the industry and who better to learn it from than people who have been successful guides, operations managers and company owners.
The Diploma in Applied Fitness is a two year programme that is designed to give you a grounding in science, understanding the human body and how it responds to exercise as well as applying this in both individual and group settings. Skills are applied in the NMIT gym as well as in a range of community settings.
The Diploma in Tourism Management provides you with skills and knowledge to work at a supervisory or management level in all sectors of the industry - own your own business or manage somebody else’s in an environmentally sustainable way. The industry needs trained supervisors in a range of different sectors. This programme is also available as an online option. Courses can be studied via NMIT online. This provides excellent flexibility for students and is a great option for people working in industry to upskill on the job.
The Certificate in Tourism and Travel is an exit qualification awarded at the end of the first year of the Diploma in Tourism Management. Students can exit if they wish after one year of study. Students complete 5 core courses and then have the option to specialise in one of four areas of study, completing three additional courses:
Tourism: You will gain front line skills required to operate in a tourism business. You prepare yourself to work in a variety of different roles within the wider tourism industry.
Manaaki Tapoi (Cultural Tourism Māori) is aimed at providing training in Māori culture in order for graduates of this specialty to take up roles in tourism enterprises to provide a Māori cultural dimension. Visitors to New Zealand are particularly interested in Māori culture and the tourism industry needs well trained Māori guides to facilitate the visitor experience.
Travel: You will be able to work in the world of retail or wholesale travel. You can follow a career working in information centres, manage travel desks across the sectors of accommodation, transport and ancillary services; be employable in central reservations such as hotel chains, car and campervan rentals, inbound and outbound tour operators, cruise operators, or manage an office of a tourism business.
The Nelson region has a vibrant arts, food and wine culture and visitors come seek out artists, craftspeople, wineries and food experience. There is a potent arts and tourism culture which is unique to Nelson. A 13 week programme in Cultural Tourism designed for international students celebrates our way of life in New Zealand and the Nelson region and provides invaluable information about how New Zealand and Nelson, in particular, market themselves internationally.
The cookery and hospitality programmes offer excellent industry placements in addition to concentrated study at NMIT over 22 weeks. Students can train full-time or part-time to complete national qualifications as well as internationally recognised qualifications in cookery, City and Guilds. Students gain the Certificate in Cookery or the Certificate in Professional Cookery. A 12 week accelerated option is available to students with previous industry experience.
Front of house staff train on the Certificate in Professional Restaurant, Wine and Bar Service programme and graduates are well set up to fast track to a supervisory role within a restaurant or hotel. Gain proficiency in food and beverage service, wine, coffee and bar skills.
NMIT also trains for the hair and beauty industry. The Professional Hairdressing programme teaches the tools of the trade, hair design, hair colouring, hair curling and waving as well as introducing hair cutting. Skills are consolidated in the School hair salon.
The Beauty Services programme prepares you to work in the beauty industry. If you are interested in make-up, beauty products and skin care, this is the place to start. Skills are consolidated in the school beauty salon.
The Beauty Therapy programme consolidates your skills to work as a beautician in a beauty therapy clinic. You learn the art of providing facials and massage as well as skills in manicure, pedicure and depilatory treatments.
The School also offers a range of part-time courses in Nail Technology, Bar Managers Certificate (LCQ), Bartending, Food Safety, Espresso and Lifestyle and Nutrition.
Nail Technology training is offered in conjunction with Creative Nails. Complete courses from the Beauty Therapy Programme as well as courses in Nail technology with Creative Nails to be awarded a National Certificate in Nail Technology.
Bar Managers is the course where people complete the training to gain a Licence Controllers Qualification (LCQ) in order to be a bar manager.
The school holds regular Bartenders courses to provide people with the skills and knowledge to work as a bartender.
Espresso courses give you the skill to make the perfect coffee. This is a pathway to becoming a barista.
The Food Safety courses provides the necessary training to meet the requirements to gain a Food Licence for a commercial premise. The School of Tourism, Hospitality and Wellbeing has four commercial operations where students practice their skills to become industry professionals. The NMIT restaurant, the NMIT Hair Salon, the NMIT Gym and the NMIT Beauty Salon.
