Accommodation

 

Finding the right accommodation is very important for the success of your studies. If required, our student support service team will do their best to assist you in finding accommodation that best suits your needs from what is available in the Nelson area.

Options include:

Homestay:

  • Live with a New Zealand family, in your own furnished room and share the family lifestyle.
  • Provides an opportunity to improve and practise your English and enrich your cultural experience.
  • Full Homestay – includes breakfast and dinner, costs NZ$195 per week, effective 1 January 2009.
  • Independent Homestay – if you prefer, you can live in a New Zealand family home at a cost of NZ$130 per week (effective 1 January 2009) but buy and cook your own food. 
  • Internet and tolls calls are extra.
  • Homestay families are selected in accordance with the New Zealand Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students
  • If you choose Homestay it is essential that you give us 4 weeks notification prior to your course commencement date to ensure that accommodation is found for you. 

New On-Campus Apartments (Nelson Campus only):

  • Live with other students in 1 bedroom, 2, 3 and 4-bedroom apartments.
  • 14 apartments in 3 blocks (42 apartments in total).
  • Secure, modern, comfortable and study-friendly environment.
  • Your own furnished apartment with a bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen to cook your own food.
  • Shared laundry facilities.
  • Situated on campus; only a few minutes walking distance to city centre and restaurants.
  • Costs range from NZ$155 per week per person for a 4-bedroom apartment, to $175 per week for a 1-bedroom unit.

Renting a House (or a room in a house):

  • If you prefer to live on your own or in a house with other students.
  • Costs approximately $100 -$150 per week depending on the quality of accommodation that you require.
  • The costs of electricity, telephone and food are your own responsibility.

Please note:  If you decide to rent a house or room, you will need to arrange this yourself.  You can find out about houses/rooms to rent through local newspapers such as The Nelson Mail, The Marlborough Express or Buy Sell Swap, through real estate companies such as www.realestate.co.nz, websites such as www.trademe.co.nz or through notice boards on campus.  We are unable to provide assistance or advice with finding this type of accommodation.
 

How to apply to NMIT for assistance with accommodation:

  • Choose from either Homestay or Apartment accommodation and then complete the International Student Accommodation Form and submit this together with your International Student Application Form.
  • Pay the accommodation placement charge of NZ$150 (you can pay this with your tuition fees).
  • NMIT is only able to arrange accommodation for you when the accommodation placement fee of $150 has been paid. The fee is non refundable.
