Student Loans Student loans are a government loan for New Zealand students that you repay through the Department of Inland Revenue when you start working. To qualify for a student loan you must be a New Zealand or Australian citizen or permanent New Zealand resident enrolled in a Ministry of Education approved full time or part time programme (the equivalent of at least 12 weeks full time). Students on non-Ministry approved programmes or courses are not eligible for student loans.
The amount you can borrow includes:
You can apply for a loan when you apply for a programme and you should most certainly apply once you have been accepted on to a programme to ensure there is enough time to process your application before you start your studies. We expect to have a StudyLink representative on the Nelson campus from October to February to help you with your loan and resolve any queries.
You will know that your loan is approved when you get a letter of approval from StudyLink. Enclose this letter with your signed acceptance form.
You will need your IRD number for your loan application and enrolment.
