Diploma in Career Guidance


Gain the training and qualifications necessary to work as a professional career practitioner through this comprehensive programme that prepares students for professional membership of the Career Practitioners Association of New Zealand.
  • Qualification: NMIT Diploma in Career Guidance, a qualification awarded at Level 6

    Graduates will meet the educational requirements for Professional Membership of the Career Practitioners Association of New Zealand.

Programme Structure

  • Four intakes per year: February May, August and November
    • The Diploma in Career Guidance is offered by correspondance which is a convenient way of studying when distance, transport arrangements or work and family commitments make attending class difficult. Students are fully supported by Learning Facilitators who provide regular feedback and motivation for students and are available to answer any questions via face to face, telephone or email contact.
  • Work-based Training: Students are required to undertake 25 hours of work-based training within each of the following courses:
    • Planning and the Career Guidance Interview
    • Professional Ethics and Career Work with Groups and Organisations
    • Reporting to Clients and Job Search Skills
  • (Students not currently employed in the career guidance sector will receive assistance to locate a suitable work placement.)
  • Workshops / Seminars: Workshops and seminars will be offered throughout the programme and students are encouraged to attend. There will be no cost to attend the workshops or seminars however travel, accommodation and other expenses are at the expense of the student.
  • The Diploma in Career Guidance programme requires a commitment of approximately 1200 hours of study time. The actual hours will vary for individual students but all students must be prepared to produce required assignment work throughout the programme.

Entry requirements

Applicants under 20 years:

  • 48 credits at NCEA level 2 across four subjects with a minimum of 12 credits in English (or equivalent)

Applicants 20 years and over:

  • Relevant documented work experience

Students whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS academic score of 6.0 (or equivalent), issued within the last 2 years.

The Diploma in Career Guidance provides graduates with the theoretical and practical skills to become a professional practitioner within the field of career guidance. Graduates will be equipped with an in-depth knowledge of the practice of career guidance in New Zealand and will develop a professional approach to practice which will enable them to work in the public and private sector.

This programme is not approved for International students.
