Certificate in Te Tuara me Te Tinana O Te Reo


This programme is designed to develop your language skills in te reo Māori to a nationally recognised level. You will gain a strong understanding in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The learning and teaching methodology of Te Ataarangi is used in this programme.

Please note that Nelson night classes and Motueka classes at level 1 and 2 are full, although new applications are being waitlisted. Day classes for Nelson campus are still open for enrolment.

  • Starts: February
  • NMIT Certificate, NYQA National Certificate Reo Māori (Level 4)  
  • A part time, two-year programme*

*Some courses within this programme are available as night classes. 

Content

Includes: Karakia, proverbs, idioms, waiata, informal and formal language practices, in-depth Māori philosophies and cultural values. 

Entry Requirements

All Applicants  

  • Have some knowledge of the Māori language, philosophies and cultural values.
  • Have a commitment to learning te reo Māori me ngā tikanga.
  • Graduates from the Certificate in Te Rito o Te Reo may progress onto this programme.
  • All applicants will be interviewed to allow them the opportunity to demonstrate their eligibility for entry.

> What's Next


Graduates can do further study in te reo Māori at a higher nationally recognised level; study in areas that require this level of te reo; persue employment opportunities where it is necessary to have a sound working knowledge of the language and cultural values, eg: Education, Health, Media, Tourism, Social Services and Government Departments.

This programme is not approved for international students.
