Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Social Work)

The Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Social Work), a Wintec qualification offered through NMIT is designed for you if you wish to pursue a professional career in social work. The programme provides in-depth knowledge and skills relating to social work practices in contemporary Aotearoa. It has a collaborative focus, encouraging people to work in teams and recognise strengths in others.

Entry requirements

All applicants:

  • 60 credits at NCEA Level 2 in four subjects, including English, OR
  • 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 in three subjects, OR equivalent.

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS academic score of 6.5 in all bands; OR equivalent.

As an alternative, applicants for the Social Work endorsement may be granted entry if they have gained one of the following:

  • NMIT Certificate in Counselling and Social Work (Level 4)
  • National Certificate in Mental Health (Mental Health Support Work) (Level 4)
  • National Certificate in Social Services (Level 4)

Applicants are required to indicate whether you have been convicted of or are being prosecuted for a criminal offence as some types of criminal conviction may limit the ability to secure practicum placements and therefore complete the programme.

Selection of candidates will also be based on the following considerations:

  • A submitted application
  • A submitted record of qualifications, employment history, work experience and two references on forms provided.
  • A personal biography 
  • An interview

Candidates who wish to enter Year 3 of the degree from a National Diploma in Social Work programme will be required to attend a panel interview and present a portfolio of evidence.

Graduates of the Wintec Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences (Social Work) will have the knowledge, skills, and attributes required for social work practice in a variety of settings, such as schools, hospitals, community groups or governmental services.
