Diploma in Viticulture and Wine Production


Would you like to create world class wines or manage a vineyard? In this hands-on, practical programme you’ll gain substantial theoretical understanding and a broad range of technical and practical skills related to grape growing and wine production. The quailfication can either be completed on campus or online.

  • Grow your own grapes, make your own wine
  • Gain on-the-job experience through work placements
  • Develop your wine palate and learn about the science of winemaking
  • You'll also gain practical experience at wineries and vineyards. This qualification leads directly into the Lincoln University Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology

On campus:
  • Two years, full time or part time equivalent
  • Starts: February and July
  • Marlborough campus

Online:

  • 16 courses studied part time over two years
  • Starts: February and July

Content

Wine Analysis, Wine Science, Viticultural Engineering, Viticultural Practices, Vineyard Experience, Viticultural Science, Plant Science, Soil Science, Vineyard Bioprotection, Wine Production, Winery Experience, Wine Technology and Evaluation, Horticulture Systems, Professional Communications, Principles of Business Computing, Human Resource Management OR Principles of Marketing. 

Entry requirements

Applicants under 20 years:

  • 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 including a minimum of 14 credits at Level 3 in each of two subjects (maths and a science subject); OR a qualification considered to be equivalent to the above. 
Applicants 20 years and over:
  • Evidence to support applicant's ability to successfully undertake study at Level 5 with reasonable likelihood of success (e.g life experience, work experience, successful completion of study at Level 4 etc)
All applicants:
  • Motivation, commitment and ability to complete the programme as demonstrated by an interview
  • It is strongly recommended that students enrolling in this programme have achieved a minimum of 14 credits NCEA Level 3 in chemistry or a C pass in Bursary chemistry, a minimum of 14 credits at NCEA Level 3in physics or maths, or a C pass in Bursary physics or maths and an intermediate level in computing.

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS academic score of 6.0 OR equivalent.

Prior learning or work experience may be credited to this programme of study.

A joint venture between NMIT and Lincoln Unoversity means that students who complete the NMIT Diploma in Viticulture and Wine Production can gain credits toward the Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology degree through Lincoln University.
