Diploma in Arts and Media (Contemporary Music)


If you want to live creatively and turn your talent for music into your career, the Diploma in Arts and Media (Contemporary Music) is a great way to start.

This diploma also offers students the opportunity to major in Visual Arts and Design, Graphics and Multimedia. These options are listed separately.

  • Music performance
  • Music studies/theory
  • Sound and Moving Image: moving image, pre- and post-production technology and video editing
  • Instrument: practice and specialisation
Entry Requirements

All applicants:

Contemporary Music applicants are required to provide evidence of a reasonable level of proficiency on their principal instrument, demonstrated by either an audition or DVD or video recording. The audition will require a demonstration of practical skills, theory knowledge and aural ability.

Specific information can be obtained by contacting the School Administrator.

Applicants unable to access DVD \ video gear may request to submit an audio cassette.

Applicants under 20 years:

  • A minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), including al least 14 credits at NCEA level 3 (OR equivalent) in each of two subjects, of which at least one relates to English; and one is from the subject list below; with a further 14 credits at Level 3 or higher taken from no more than two additional domains on the NQF

OR Successful completion of a recognised art / media foundation programme or equivalent, for example the Level 4 courses within the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology Certificate in Arts and Media (Contemporary Music).

Applicants 20 years and over:

  • No academic qualifications are required

Applicants whose first language is not English will have an IELTS overall Academic band score of at least 6.0 OR equivalent.

Graduates of this programme may establish an independent arts
or media practice, seek employment in the arts / media sectors
or continue with further study.
