Bachelor of Arts and Media


Study art and design in the creative heart of Nelson. Based in a region blessed with stunning natural landscapes and an abundance of sunshine hours, you'll be able to draw on the same creative influences that have attracted more than 350 practicing artists to the region.

The degree programme will provide you with the fundamental skills to move into personal practice or a variety of careers within the arts / media industries, or to pursue further study. You'll develop the ability to generate innovative ideas and design solutions grounded in academic and technical excellence, effective use of visual language and extensive specialist knowledge. The studio courses offered in the degree are flexible enough to enable you to follow your own interests and directions.

Programme structure:
Students choose a pathway of specialist courses which eventuates in a major. Students are also able to take additional courses from the total range of Arts and Media courses to make up their qualification. Nelson campus.

Content includes:
Bachelor of Arts and Media - Visual Arts and Design major

Includes disciplines such as:

  • Object Design: 3-D construction, jewellery, textiles, ceramics, glass, sculpture, metal and wood
  • Image: painting, print-making and photography
  • Graphic Design: image manipulation, interactive and web design, file management and output, graphic design principles, animation etc 
  • Sound and Moving Image: moving image, pre- and post-production technology
  • Visual Culture: history and theory of images
  • Drawing and Design: figure drawing and experimental, technical and explorative drawing How do I choose between the Diploma in Arts and Media and the Bachelor of Arts and Media?

 

>Entry requirements

Applicants under 20 years:

  • A minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), including at least 14 credits at NCEA Level 3 (OR equivalent) in each of two subjects, of which at least one relates to English; and at least oneis from the subject list below; with a further 14 credits at Level 3 OR higher taken from no more than two additional domains on the NQF

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an overall IELTS Academic score of 5.5 OR equivalent.

OR Successful completion of a recognised arts / media foundation programme or equivalent, for example the Level 4 courses within the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technoloy Diploma in Arts and Media (Certificate in Arts and Media) 

Applicants 20 years and over:

  • No academic qualificationsare  required

Applicants whose first language is not English will have an IELTS Academic score of at least 6.0 OR an equivalent qualification.

All applicants must submit a portfolio of work showing ability in arts and / or media.
