Bachelor of Nursing


Due to strong demand, the Bachelor of Nursing Programme is now WAITLISTING any new applications received for 2012.


Entry requirements for the Bachelor of Nursing at NMIT will change in 2013. The information in the e-pack below provides you with the current NMIT entry requirements, future entry requirements and the transition between them. When you graduate you will have an NMIT / CPIT Bachelor of Nursing Qualification.

Programme structure

  • The degree runs full-time over three years and must be completed within five years of first enrolment. Part time options are available. There is an equal mix of theory and practice allowing students to apply knowledge and skills to real-life settings. Some travel and accommodation arrangements are necessary to complete practical sessions out of Nelson.

  • Nelson campus

All courses carry a credit rating towards the degree. Students must gain 360 credits in total comprising 120 credits each year. Approriate prior learning will be recognised.

Level 5:

  • Professonal Care
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Lifespan Development
  • Context of Professional Practice
  • Nursing Practice

Level 6:

  • Professional Care
  • Pathophysiology and Pharmacology
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi/ The Treaty of Waitangi
  • Context of Professional Practice
  • Nursing Practice

Level 7:

  • Professional Care
  • Hauora Māori/ Māori Health
  • Nursing Practice (including elective) 

Entry Requirements

Applicants under 20 years:

  • At least 42 credits at Level 3 or higer on the NQF, including a minimum of 14 credits (L3 or higher) in each of two subjects from an approved subject list, with an additional 14 credits (L3 or higher) taken from no more than two additional domains on the NQF or approved subjects
  • At least 14 credits at Level 1 or higher in mathematics
  • At least 8 credits at Level 2 or higher in English - 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing.

Or equivalent.

Applicants 20 years and over*:

  • In order to succeed on this programme it is strongly recommended that the an applicant has successfully completed a qualification at Level 3 or above within the last five years in a health related field, or successfully completed the NMIT Certificate in Foundation Nursing (or equivalent).

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS score of 6.5 (with no less than 6.5 in each band) issued in the last two years, OR equivalent.

Graduates can work in many different areas of nursing, either in hospitals or in the community, e.g medical, surgical, emergency department, mental health, public health and rural health nursing.

If an applicant does not meet the educational entry requirements through studies at school she/he may wish to enrol on either the Certificate in Foundation Nursing or Lifespan Development or Anatomy and Physiology at the School of Health and Social Services.
