Bachelor of Commerce


The degree is a combination of practical business and more theoretical conceptual skills. The first year of the degree provides a solid foundation in general business and management related courses. You can then specialise in your chosen major. The Bachelor of Commerce is fully accredited by the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Programme structure:
  • Level 7
  • 3 years full time or part time options
  • Two semesters per year, starting February and July

This programme offers majors in accounting, management, marketing or a combination of these. Courses include: accounting, management, marketing, human resources, law, business maths and statistics, computing and communication.

Accounting major
You'll learn:
  • The knowledge and skills to understand and process accounting information in most business environments.
  • Conceptual and technical skills to prepare a full set of financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices in New Zealand.
  • The ability to apply basic concepts and techniques to cost determination and control in manufacturing and service industries.
  • A sound understanding of the application of computer technology to business information systems.
  • And complete all courses required by NZICA to complete Chartered Accountant or Accredited Chartered Accountant qualifications.

Management major
You'll learn:

  • The ability to translate management philosophy, in a practical way, into an operational and organisational setting.
  • The ability to think strategically and understand strategic issues facing organisations.
  • The knowledge and skills to formulate policy in the areas of human resource management, operations management and general management.
  • The ability to innovate and manage change.
  • An understanding of costing and financial management processes.

Marketing major
You'll learn:

  • The ability to translate marketing philosophy into an organisational setting in a practical way.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to formulate policy in the areas of product and service, pricing, promotion, and distribution.
  • The ability to take part in: formulating a marketing plan, managing a marketing research project, setting prices, conceptulising and evaluating promotion campaigns, managing trade relations, developing new products and services, day-to-day product/service management, formulating business strategy in relation to marketing, undertaking performance evaluation.
  • The ability to innovate and manage change in a marketing context.

Entry requirements

Applicants under 20 years:

  • A minimum of 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher over 3 subjects on the NZQA approved subject list, AND
  • A minimum of 15 credits at NCEA Level 2 in mathematics, AND
  • A minimum of 8 credits at NCEA Level 2 in English OR
  • A minimum of 72 credits at NCEA Level 2 over four subjects on the NZQA approved subject list, including:
    • A minimum of 15 credits at NCEA Level 2 in mathematics AND
    • A minimum of 8 credits at NCEA Level 2 in English or equivalent.

Applicants 20 years and over:

  • Must provide a curriculum vitae showing evidence of previous academic or work experience to help us assess your suitability for this programme.

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS academic score of 6.0; OR equivalent.

Careers in accounting, chatered accounting, management, marketing, human resource management, operations management, banking and finance are all viable options.

AWI International AucklandNMIT's Bachelor of Commerce and Graduate Diplomas in Marketing and Management are available in Auckland through an alliance between NMIT and AWI International Education Group.
