Diploma in Adventure Tourism


Can you see yourself guiding visitors in adventure activities in New Zealand's beautiful wilderness? With this programme, you’ll work closely with adventure operators to gain experience in the adventure tourism industry. Students can exit after year one with the NMIT Certificate in Adventure Tourism (Level 4) or carry on to the diploma in years two and three. Gradutes from year two can obtain industry tickets in most disciplines.

  • A full time programme that involves classroom teaching and technical skills courses off-campus

Content includes:

Year One (Level 4) Certificate in Adventure Tourism:
 

You'll develop the generic skills to work in the adventure tourism industry as well as skills specific to your chosen field of interest.

Courses include: Adventure Guiding One; Customer Communications for Adventure Tourism ; Risk Management for Adventure Activities; Raft and Kayak; Rock and Hike 2 and 3.

Year Two (Level 5) Diploma in Adventure Tourism:

Building on from year one, this challenging programme offers students the chance to develop advanced adventure tourism skills and gain industry tickets.

Courses include: Adventure Guiding Two; Industry Practice, Interpretive Guiding for the Tourism Industry.
And choose two strands (Two technical skills courses per strand) from the list below:

  • Hike Two and Hike Three
  • Raft Two and Raft Three
  • Rock Two and Rock Three
  • Sea Kayak Two and Sea Kayak Three
  • Snow Two and Snow Three

Year Three (Level 6) Diploma in Adventure Tourism Leadership: 

Building on from year two, you'll be able to gain industry tickets, develop instruction and leadership skills or choose tourism management courses to enhance business skills.

Courses include: Adventure Tourism Leadership, Environmental Tourism Management, Industry Specialisation One, Tourism Practicum
Optional Courses: Industry Specialisation Two, Cultural Tourism, Foundation Course, Tourism Industry Management, Tourism Marketing, Human Resource Management for the Tourism Industry, Tourism Business Skills Two, Information Technology Two, Principles of Tourism, Customer Relations

Entry requirements

YEAR ONE:

Applicants under 20 years:

  • A minimum of 40 credits at NCEA Level 2 across four subjects (at least 12 credits in one subject); OR
  • National Certificate in Tourism and Travel (Introductory Skills) (Level 2); OR equivalent

Applicants over 20 years and over:

  • No minimum academic requirements

All applicants:

  • Must have adequate level of fitness, provide evidence of outdoor activity participation and supply two referee reports

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS academic score of 5.5 (with at least 5.0 in each band) issued within the last two years, OR equivalent.

YEAR TWO:

All applicants:

  • Successful completion of the NMIT Certificate in Adventure Tourism, awarded at Level 4; OR demonstrated equivalent skills and knowledge through presentation of a portfolio of evidence
  • Must have adequate level of fitness, provide evidence of outdoor activity participation and supply two referee reports

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS academic score of 5.5 (with at least 5.0 in each band) issued within the last two years; OR equivalent.

YEAR THREE:

All applicants:

  • Successful completion of the NMIT Diploma in Adventure Tourism; OR demonstrated equivalent skills and knowledge through presentation of a portfolio of evidence
  • Must have adequate level of fitness, provide evidence of outdoor activity participation and supply two referee reports

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS academic score of 6.0 issued within the last two years; OR equivalent.
